Lucas Kohl Finishes 11th and 13th in Road America Doubleheader

Elkhart Lake, Wis. — This season has been a learning experience for John Cummiskey Racing’s Lucas Kohl, and that education continued Saturday in Rounds 8 and 9 of the Mazda Road to Indy Coopr Tires USF2000 race at historic Road America.

Driving the No. 34 Bellko Trading machine, the 18-year-old from Brazil started and finished 11th in Race 1, and after starting 10th in Race 2, fell back as far as 15th before recovering for a 13th place finish.

Race 1 started out well for Kohl as he moved up as high as seventh place early on in the 30-minute race. But like teammate Ayla Agren, he lost a couple of spots on the last restart with one lap to go and dropped a couple of positions.

“Restarts here are tough,” Kohl said. “As we were in the middle of the pack, everyone tries to go to the front and everyone tries to make a move. We were restarting on the uphill and I couldn’t see the green flag.”

In Race 2, Kohl started 10th but on the first lap of the race went into the grass and lost several positions to the field. The rest of the race was an uphill battle, but he salvaged the race by moving up some positions.

“I had a problem in Turn 3, the car was understeering a lot,” he said. “I lost spots but got them back later so it wasn’t that bad. We were able to take some good things out of it.”

Kohl really enjoyed his first trip to the fastest road course in the United States, and feels like he is taking some good things into the next event in Toronto in three weeks.

“We didn’t have a lot of track time, so at times it was a tough weekend,” Kohl said, “but in the end it was really positive for us.”
